The Millenia Ruby is stolen from the Ritzholdt Museum and insurance investigator Kate Diamond will stop at nothing to retrieve it … even if it means getting shot at, impersonating an FBI agent and tangling with a live volcano. Enlisting the aid of her retired jewel thief parents and their band of thieves, safecrackers and con men from the Golden Capers retirement village, Kate arms herself with a variety of gadgets and disguises to follow a trail of clues from icy Antarctica to a desolate tropical island. But she soon finds that what started off as an easy job may end with a deadly twist. Why is someone going to so much trouble to keep possession of the ruby? And what, exactly, does Kate’s ex-partner, FBI agent Ace Mason, have up his sleeve? Will she discover the real hidden agenda behind the theft of the gem before it’s too late? (Amazon)

This Leighann Dobbs cozy mystery is a cute and quick read.  I really enjoyed the first book in the Kate Diamond Adventure series when it came out at the end of 2013. The second instalment was released in 2015 and the third will be published in January 2018!  With all the books I’ve read in between, how am I supposed to remember what happened before???  That’s my biggest grievance with this series.  I’ve gotten spoilt with books in a series being released fairly close together, so that bothers me.

At least it gave me a good Throwback Thursday idea! I’m skimming through this one right now and will do so for part two as well (Ancient Hiss Story) before I can properly enjoy the upcoming release, Heist Society.

One of my favourite things about this series is the quirky secondary characters.  Gideon is the scientist sidekick who happily creates mission enhancing gadgets from the safety of the lab in headquarters.  Max is the mysterious boss, who is never seen.  His character is still be developed but his elusiveness sparks rampant curiosity.  The characters who steal the show though are the Golden Capers crew members.  These ‘retired’ con men and women happily help Kate navigate her unconventional missions.  Skimming thorough this story is at least, very entertaining.

How do you feel about books in a series being released yeeaaaarrrrss apart?

  1. I agree that it’s hard to remember prior books in a series if the new releases are spaced far apart. I don’t think I’ve read any that are spaced YEARS apart. One series I like has a book released once a year. That’s not too bad because the prior books are so good it’s hard to forget them. ( :

  2. I don’t read too many series, so it usually isn’t that big of a problem for me. But when I am reading a series, and want to actually continue it, it’s killer! For example, The Stormlight Archives, by Brandon Sanderson. It’s supposed to be a ten-book series. He just released book three. I think book one was published about seven years ago. It will take decades to reach the end. 😥

  3. I totally agree, I do not like to wait. I have had to reread or at least check out reviews to remember a plot line in a series, not always the authors fault though, I just took a long time to get to the next book. I reallly don’t like a long time between books if there is a cliff hanger at the end. It doesn’t usually stop me from reading a series though.
