Snowflakes Over The Starfish Cafe by Jessica Redland – Review and Blog Tour @rararesources @JessicaRedland

Thanks so much to Rachel of Rachel’s Random Resources for a chance to be on this blog tour. Welcome to my stop.

Welcome to The Starfish Café – where you will find stunning views, delicious food and lifelong friendships.

Two broken hearts.

Since she inherited The Starfish Café, Hollie has poured her heart into the business, striving to keep her mother’s traditions and warm-hearted spirit alive. But behind closed doors Hollie is searching for true happiness, as she grieves the tragic loss of her family who were once the beating heart of the café…

An unexpected meeting.

Jake lives by two rules: don’t let anyone get close and don’t talk about what happened. Little does he know that a chance meeting at The Starfish Café, facilitated by a fluffy lost dog, is about to turn his world upside down…

The chance to love again.

Can Hollie and Jake break down the barriers that have been holding them back from finding love and happiness, before Christmas comes around? Afterall, with courage, nothing is impossible…

Jessica is back! Not that she really went anywhere…

We’re back on the gorgeous Yorkshire coast and we have an opportunity to explore another part of Whitsborough Bay.

One of the beautiful things about Jessica’s work is how she creates characters and scenarios that really stay with the reader. Almost two weeks after I’d finished the story, one Sunday I found myself thinking about this book again and wondering about real life people who find themselves in somewhat similar situations. I must say, that totally cast a damper over my Sunday mood! Lol.

But in all fairness, the sweetness of the story and the richness of each character’s journey more than make up for the emotional rawness.

The story starts out with some time jumps. We see alternating chapters from both Hollie and Jake’s perspectives. We also have chapters that alternate from seven years before to present to back a couple more years back to present. Admittedly, it was a bit disorienting for me at first. However, the backstories that are built up in this manner are simply amazing.

Jake and Hollie both have lost so much in their short lives, it’s incredible how they both manage to remain earnest, giving souls through it all. Jessica takes readers down their difficult paths through flashbacks and present day explanations. Readers are also sometimes treated to third party perspectives through chats with family friends. All the pieces add up to very moving story.

If you’re putting together your Christmas reading list, I’d strongly recommend you pop this one on there. The Christmas element doesn’t sparkle brightly throughout the entire story, but the main plot points do centre around the festive season and how both characters deal with it, especially when their past experiences aren’t the best. The central themes of hope and love remain true to the season.

For the animal lovers, I dare you not to fall in love with Pickle (and his official name)! This spunky ball of energy brings our protagonists together in a way they wouldn’t have done on their own. I absolutely love how this doggie is woven into the narrative!

This is a tale of how tragedy, grief and conflict can be overcome through persistence, love and support. It’s a charming anecdote to remind readers of how short life can be and why we should live the best life we can, while we can.

In short, another wonderful emotional roller coaster of a read from Jessica Redland, one of my absolute favourite authors!

I give Snowflakes Over the Starfish Cafe 4.5/5 intense espresso shots.

  1. That cover is gorgeous and so Christmassy. Snowflakes Over the Starfish Cafe sounds wonderful, I love a small town story and a dog named Pickle sounds like fun.
