The magic universe of mermaids, full of laughter, song and delight: help your child discover self-confidence and find their inner flow by diving deep into the magical world of Mermaidia. Venus Underwater: Songs from Mermaidia introduces the underwater world of Mermaidia. This humorous and whimsical collection of poems and songs reveals how baby mermaids are made, what mermaid families are like, and how mermaids study magic at School of the Fish to become Sea Witches (not Sand Witches). Created by family therapist Julia Hengst the Venus and Her Fly Trip series helps nurture the whole child, promoting self-esteem, confidence and social/emotional/mental health in a fun, playful way.

There is so much to delight in as you read this children’s books about mermaids by Julia Hengst. From the illustrations to the messages to the beautiful poems (songs), I’m sure you and your young readers will enjoy.
The illustrations by Esther Samuels-Davis are simply divine. The gorgeous colour palette may be muted but the artistry is bold and beautiful. I love how, through the artwork, the sense of diversity and inclusivity that drives the story is made ever more present.
The messages of the book are valuable for both children and adults. Children are encouraged to explore and celebrate their “Emoceans”, kindness, self-love, meditation, and inner and outer beauty as our loved ones come in all shapes, colours and sizes.
One area of difficulty: Some of the sentences are a bit long and rather than rely on high-frequency words, there are quite a few more complex words. It’s great for vocabulary building, but younger readers will need a lot more guidance.
The layout of artwork versus text is spot on. The beautiful illustrations stand out while the fonts are clean and easy to read.
Overall, a truly charming book! I give Venus Underwater: Songs from Mermaidia 4/5 swimming espresso shots.

That cover is gorgeous, and would certainly appeal to children. If the illustrations inside the book are as nice as the cover, I can see why you liked it so much.
