Review of It Happened One Autumn by Lisa Kleypas

Headstrong American heiress Lillian Bowman has come to England to find an aristocratic husband. Unfortunately, no man is strong enough to tame the stubborn beauty’s fierce will. Except, perhaps, the powerful and arrogant Earl of Westcliff—a man Lillian despises more than anyone she’s ever met.

Marcus, Lord Westcliff, is famous for his icy English reserve and his supreme self-control. But something about the audacious Lillian drives him mad. Whenever they’re in the same room, they can’t stop themselves from battling furiously to gain the upper hand.

Then one afternoon, a stunningly sensuous encounter changes everything . . . and Lillian discovers that beneath the earl’s reserved façade, he is the passionate and tender lover of her dreams. What neither Westcliff nor Lillian suspect, however, is that a sinister conspiracy threatens to destroy any chance of happiness. After a shocking betrayal endangers Lillian’s safety—and possibly her life—will Marcus be able to save her before it’s too late?

Available on Amazon.

Lillian is a spunky and charming heroine. She and her sister, Daisy, have a sweet relationship and get into loads of mischief together. It’s really hard not to like these full of life characters who, despite trying to fit into the English aristocracy, can’t help their love of rounders and have an innate need to say thanks ‘even to the servants!’ The scenes between the Bowman sisters and Marcus’s over-starched mother are quite hilarious!

The friendship amongst the wallflowers is again a delightful part of the story. The teasing and camaraderie is charming to read. Some of it reminds series readers of the previous book and some hints at what might still be to come. Of course, I still love Anabelle and Simon from book 1, so I quite enjoyed any scenes where they appeared.

Lord Westcliff is the quintessential aristocratic English Earl- proper, arrogant, elegant and incredibly reserved. Yet underneath all that lies a kind-hearted man who has overcome a dark and horrible childhood. His relationship with his sisters shows his softer side and Lillian helps bring out his playful nature. These two complement each other perfectly.

My only source of dislike for this novel lies in Marcus’s overbearing ways. Yes it’s great and sexy enough in a romance novel to have the overly alpha hero. However, there were some parts where the issue of consent seemed a bit iffy. I prefer my romance stories where that’s a whole lot clearer.

The blurb hints at some intrigue and nefarious plotting. We don’t really get into that until towards the end of the book though. The ‘villain’ in this case isn’t too surprising but Lillian’s resourcefulness is especially useful to help escape a hairy situation. Marcus also makes for a dashing hero, when his turn comes!

Overall, another sweet installment in The Wallflower series. The end of the book segues into Evie’s story… I can’t wait to read that one! I give It Happened One Autumn 4/5 espresso shots.
