Review of Bear With Me by Jessica Redland

Jemma has the job of her dreams as curator for the children’s section of a museum in London. She spends each day surrounded by the one thing she’s absolutely passionate about: teddy bears. When boyfriend, Scott, shows a genuine interest in her passion instead of laughing at her for “playing with teddies all day”, she knows he’s a keeper.

Returning home to the North Yorkshire seaside town of Whitsborough Bay to celebrate her birthday, Jemma thinks she’s heading for her happy-ever-after when Scott unexpectedly proposes. So, a few days later, why isn’t he retuning her calls or responding to her texts?

Julie has always been a wonderful single mother to Jemma and her little brother, Sean. As owner of specialist teddy bear shop, Bear With Me, and the creative genius behind the successful range of Ju-Sea Bears, she inspires Jemma with her ability to balance a demanding career with home life. So why is the shop now in disarray and why is Sean so upset?

Sam thought he had his future all worked out. With a promising neurology career, a home, and a devoted fiancée, life was looking good. But now he’s all alone in a strange city, far from everyone and everything he cares about, struggling to rebuild the tatters of his life. Did he do the right thing by running away? What does the future hold and is he strong enough to face it?

Sometimes love finds us when we least expect it. But sometimes love leaves us, just as unexpectedly. When you’ve loved and lost, can you bear to let love in again?

Bear With Me, as all will be revealed …

Available on Amazon and through Kindle Unlimited.

Oh Jessica, I do adore your stories.

I had all intentions of savouring this story as I have to wait for her next release, but I started reading on a Friday morning and finished by the Saturday afternoon. I was just too engrossed in the story to put it down.

We’ve heard about Jemma and the “Bear With Me” store on Whitsborough Bay’s Castle Street and this time we spend the story surrounded by the cute bears and Jemma’s dramas.

I always enjoy Jessica’s stories because they’re not ‘just’ a romance. They’re about our heroines coming to terms with what’s going on in their lives and how they need to change to cope and survive. Jemma has to do just that as secrets about her fiancé come out and as her family’s needs demand her attention.  I don’t think Jemma always makes the best decisions, but aren’t we all flawed somehow?

This story is a bit different from the author’s norm in that it utilizes dual points of view. We get chapters told from Jemma’s perspective and then chapters told from Sam’s. Some of Sam’s chapters are simply heart-breaking but so sweetly written. I couldn’t help but fall a little in love with him and anticipate his well-deserved happy ending.

Perhaps there are a couple of convenient coincidences and too-neat twists but I don’t mind and find they simply make the story sweeter.

Jessica finds delightful and natural ways to create cameos for Whitsborough Bay characters from other books. It’s just the right touch to remind regular readers of characters we love and does not take away from the current story.

Overall, I fully engaged with this tale of struggle and love and now have to “bear with Jessica” until she releases another Whitsborough story!

I give this book 4.5/5 beary cute espresso shots.

  1. Aw, Nina, you are so wonderful. I spotted this review on Amazon earlier this week and have been eagerly watching out for it appearing on your blog so I could thank you so very, very much. I’m so glad you enjoyed Bear With Me. Along with the final part of the series, it’s my favourite of the stories I’ve written. Not too long for the next one, though. It’s already on NetGalley so do pop your request in if you haven’t already done so. It’s another departure for me as it’s 3 viewpoints and 3rd person. I do like to mix it up a bit!

Really loved this review and, as always, all your amazing support. Thank you, thank you, thank you xx

    1. Oh yay!!! I see I have lots of updating to do to this post then. And then we get the Christmas one too????
I can imagine this one has a very special place in your heart.

Hehe… I wrote the review and scheduled the post and figured I better pop it on Amazon before I forgot.

And you’re absolutely welcome. I wish authors like you could get so much more exposure!

      1. Thanks, Nina. Plans have changed slightly since I secured my publishing deal. My first brand new book, ‘The Secret to Happiness’ is going to be the first release through Boldwood and that’s the one that’s on NetGalley now, out on 3rd Sept. Jemma from ‘Bear With Me’ puts in an appearance as one of the 3 x main character is her best friend, Karen.

Next year will see the original series re-edited, re-packaged and re-released and hopefully get that wider exposure. The trilogy will become a 4-book series because ‘Raving About Rhys’ and ‘Callie’s Christmas Wish’ (which were a prequel novella and then a follow-up to that) will be released as a combined book as part one of the series, followed by Steven, Gary and Daran. There’ll be another brand new book next year too which could be any one of three I’m working on, and a fresh version of ‘Christmas at The Chocolate Pot Cafe’ will be released next Christmas with an extra few chapters. This does mean, however, that there won’t be a Christmas release this year.

Really hoping that my fabulous publisher will help me get the exposure you mention because I’ve struggled with that being an indie writer alongside a day job.

Thanks again for your amazing support. Hope you have a fabulous weekend.

      2. Oh Jessica. I’m so excited for you and thrilled you have got a publisher you’re happy with. I may have to try some of those re-packaged and re-edited books after all. Lol. And I’m definitely looking forward to the new ‘series’ even if I’m a bit sad about no Christmas book! Ah well, you’ve just created a space in my Christmas reading list!
Does this re-packaging mean that your hubby’s artwork won’t be gracing the cover anymore?

      1. Hi Shalini, I wasn’t while I was an indie author but I’ve now secured a 9-book publishing deal (a combination of new books and some of my back-catalogue re-edited and re-released). the first book with my new publisher, Boldwood, is out on 3rd September and it’s available on NetGalley now. It’s called ‘The Secret to Happiness’ 🙂 x

  2. Nina, so sorry to start a new comment to reply to Shallini but it won’t let me reply to her comment. Shallini – there was a problem on NetGalley for my book from Thursday (possibly before) to Yesterday where nobody could request it and we’re not quite sure why. It is now resolved. That could have been it. If not, if you want to DM me on Twitter or FB with your email, I can make sure that you are accepted for review (if you would like to read it; no pressure if not) 🙂 x

      1. Oh and yes, that means no more of hubby’s artwork. However, your very favourite cover (Charlee and the Chocolate Shop) will stick around a bit longer as that’s not one of the ones they’re taking … at the moment anyway. We may still get around to getting some copies printed 🙂

  3. Yay! So glad you’ve secured it. Can’t wait to hear what you think when you manage to squeeze it in 🙂 xx

Re the print books, I’m not sure. We have a lot of thinking to do. It may be that we just print a small run ourselves rather than do them on POD. Will keep you posted xx
