Blog Tour for One Very Odd Teacher by Robbie Yates

Today is my stop on the blog tour for One Very Odd Teacher by Robbie Yates!

Thank you to Digital Reads for the opportunity to read and review this cute and funny book.

The humming noise got louder. Adam willed himself to focus. He had to finish his math test.
Suddenly, the noise became unbearable. He glanced up.

Mrs Murphy was inches away, leaning over another kid’s desk. Was the noise coming from her?

***

Every child remembers a teacher who was a little bizarre, prickly or ill-tempered. Some teachers, though, are very odd indeed, and warrant some closer attention…

This quirky chapter book will thrill kids who are adventurous, brave, and a little bit cheeky!

What is up with Mrs. Murphy? Adam is the eleven year old protagonist to whom we are introduced in this latest book by Robbie Yates. We join him as he ponders the peculiarities and inconsistencies surrounding his class teacher Mrs. Murphy.  Adam is a delightful children’s hero who displays child like frustration and infuriation when his teacher just isn’t doing a good job.

I love Adam. His curiosity is very infectious and I love that even though everyone around him doesn’t really believe him, he still investigates the oddness of his teacher, Mrs. Murphy.  One aspect I really enjoyed, was author Robbie Yates’ use of visuals to represent Adam’s journal entries of his findings.  This boy knows how to record his observations!

TrooCo markers… they were like a character all of their own in this story! And one thing we learn early on is that TrooCo markers are just not very good, no matter what Mrs. Murphy says!

As a child, did you ever try to tell your parents something only to get them started on their own experiences as a child? Every time Adam tries to tell his parents about the weird Mrs. Murphy, they go off on a tangent about their own odd teachers from back in the day. I found this to be a cute addition to the story.

But even if Adam’s parents want to think Mrs. Murphy is a sweet lady, and even if he’s not sure he can trust the school principal, Adam (with his best friend) is determined to get to the bottom of the mystery. Their planning and plotting and note taking make for a fun read.

I love Robbie Yates’ writing. His sense of humor is enthralling, and I was laughing all the way through.  Very importantly, Adam feels authentic, and he acts his age.

I think children will enjoy reading about Adam’s adventures in One Very Odd Teacher. It may make them question some of their very own teachers…. 😉

I give this book 4/5 wonderfully odd espresso shots.
