Friday 56 (6)

Today’s meme is the THE FRIDAY 56.  The only rules are to grab a book, any book, turn to page 56 or 56% in your eReader,  find any sentence, (or few, just don’t spoil it), post it, then add your URL to the Linky on the host site Freda’s Voice – easy peasy!

I’m featuring a paragraph from 56% of The War of Don Emmanuel’s Netherparts by Louis de Bernieres.
This rambunctious first novel by the author of the bestselling Corelli’s Mandolin is set in an impoverished, violent, yet ravishingly beautiful country somewhere in South America. When the haughty Dona Constanza decides to divert a river to fill her swimming pool, the consequences are at once tragic, heroic, and outrageously funny. “Walks a precarious edge between slapstick and pathos, never once losing its balance.”–Washington Post Book World.

Aurelio had seen Parlanchina walking behind Federico, as before.  “Gwubba, he said, “Did you not marry a god?”  But Parlanchina only tossed back her hair and smiled her secretive smile.
Federico began to have aching dreams about a beautiful wild girl who lived in the jungle.
The War of Don Emmanuel’s Netherparts employs magical realism to make this a piece of artful story writing that is funny, poignant and heart-breaking all at once.  I’ve read this book a couple of times and I love it so much that I decided I would have to read Corelli’s Mandolin as it is by the same author.  It’s on my list for later this year.

      1. No, while I like many of you tags, I really don’t have time to do them. After reading 56 in several books that I like I didn’t feel that portion was a good representation of the book. I should a couple like Floral Friday and Friday FEATHERS and haven’t had the time. Both got a lot of hits. I am finding WWW Wednesday and FL Friday get the most clicks.
