Book Beginnings on Fridays
Book Beginnings on Fridays is a meme hosted at Rose City Reader where you share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.
You should also head over to Rose City Reader to add your post to the Book Beginnings link.
I’ve seen this meme quite a lot, especially combined with some of the other fun Friday memes like Friday 56 and First Line Friday. Thought this week I’d give it a try.
Today’s book is one that I’ll be featuring as part of its blog tour soon: Andorra Pett and the Oort Cloud Café by Richard Dee.
Chapter 1
“Is that it?”
The entrance was in partial darkness, the alleyway behind me dimly lit with flickering tubes. My heels had clicked on the floor as I passed small piles of rubbish and stained brick-effect cladding. the heels didn’t really work here but I was out of my depth and struggling to catch up. Same as the clothes, my designer suit was a little out of place in this riot of grey. It was a splash of colour in a drab working world.
Meet Andorra Pett; with her trusty sidekick, she’s taken over a derelict café. On a mining station. It just happens to be orbiting Saturn! She’s hoping for a fresh start, away from all the drama of her old life. It’s a chance to relax and start again in a place where nobody knows anything about her or her past. But the café holds a secret, and secrets have a habit of coming out; whether you want them to or not. And being accident prone doesn’t help. The more you try to pretend that you know what’s going on, the worse it gets. Andorra’s plans for peace and quiet get lost amid the revelations and skulduggery and she soon realises that the fate of the whole station lies in her hapless hands.
In space, you can still trip over your feet; the question is, will you land upright?
I’m quite excited to really get into this one. The genre is pretty unique: a sci-fi cozy mystery. The opening paragraph matches the book description and I’m eager to learn just how much the protagonist contrasts against her apparent drab surroundings.
Hope you’re enjoying your Friday read.
Have a great weekend!
Sounds an interesting mix of genres.

I haven’t read sci-fi that much. It sounds really interesting. I hope you enjoy reading it. 🙂

I am. it’s still more mystery so far than sci-fi.

I can’t tell. Is this book for middle grade readers. The cover looks young.

I wouldn’t say so. It’s a cozy mystery more suitable to older readers.

Well, the start is definitely a hook, isn’t it?! i don’t generally read sci-fun, but that one, cozy mystery yet, certainly sounds fun!

Yeah… I’m not a sci-fi person really either but I was curious how this mixing of genres would work… and so far it’s working.

It is certainly different. Book beginning on Friday sounds like intriguing why to learn about books I would to read but don’t have the time. So many good books never to the views they deserve.

Oh yes. It’s a pretty interesting meme. The usual lament…. too many books, too little time.

I spent some time this afternoon setting up meme. I keep getting waylaid to stop reading some old favorites. NetGalley had a lot of new books on their site today and that delay me, also.

Oh dear. I promised I’d not go on NetGalley until I finished and reviewed one more book…
glad you had some time to work on the meme.

That was my problem. I told myself no more books until catch up.

I refuse to even peek…. though I am tempted. 😉

Oh my, this is the coolest thing I’ve seen. Is this like judging a book (or setting expectations) from the first paragraph? Awesome

When you hop around and look at some of the other books the participants use, you can get some good recommendations.

I thought so too! Does it need to happen every week?

Yup. Click on the link for Rose City Reader in my post and it should take you to her page. You’ll find all the participants on that page. There are several interesting Friday books, including Friday 56 over on Freda’s Voice.

You don’t have to participate every week.
