First Line Friday 56 (2)

Another Friday meme mash-up this week.

First Line Fridays is hosted by Hoarding Books.  First Line Fridays take 5!  Hop on over to Hoarding Books and post a link to your first line.

First Line Fridays hosted by Hoarding Books
My first line this week comes from the Cozy Mysteries Collection: Home and Holiday Collection. This is a 6 book cozy mystery collection from Hope Callaghan’s most popular series.  Today’s first line comes from the first book in the collection, “Home for the Holidays” of the Garden Girls Mystery series.

“Oh this isn’t going to work.” Gloria Rutherford stared into the mirror and squinted at her refection.  The dress was… well, not Gloria.

The second meme is the THE FRIDAY 56 meme (take 4).  The only rules are to grab a book, any book, turn to page 56 or 56% in your eReader,  find any sentence, (or few, just don’t spoil it), post it, then add your URL to the Linky on the host site Freda’s Voice – easy peasy!

I took today’s 56 from page 56 of Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden.  I’ve had this book sitting on my shelf for almost ten years now and haven’t gotten to it yet!  Need to remedy that situation soon.

While mother went on talking on the telephone, one of the elderly maids came in with several strips of freshly cut ginger for me to hold against my face where Hatsumomo had slapped me.  The commotion of the door opening and closing woke Mother’s little dog, Taku, who was an ill-tempered creature with a smashed face. He seemed to have only three pastimes- to bark, to snore, and to bite people who tried to pet him.

  1. Happy Friday!

My first line is from the book I’m reading next, Like Moonlight at Low Tide by Nicole Quigley….

People never ask me the right question when they ask me what happened the beginning of my senior year. They always ask what his last words were.

    Have a great weekend!!

  2. Sounds like a great collection of stories!
On my blog I’m sharing the first line from Gina Holder’s debut novel “Whither Shall I Go?” so do stop by and check that out! I’ll share with you here the first line of a book that has been on my TBR for several months, I really loved this book!

  3. I like that first line!

I had the pleasure of reading Holding the Fort so I could review it. From the very first line I was captivated.

    June 1885 Wichita, Kansas

The fumes of the gaslights at the foot of the stage protected Louisa Bell from the more noxious odors of her audience.

  4. sounds like she’s preparing for something major.
On my blog, I share the first line from One Sip at a Time: https://francebooktours.com/2017/12/08/first-line-fridays-one-sip-at-a-time/
I’m also currently reading The White Tiger, by Aravind Adiga. The first line: “Neither you nor I speak English, but here are some things that can be said only in English”.
And my FRiday 56 is here: https://wordsandpeace.com/2017/12/08/friday-56-one-sip-at-a-time/

  5. Looks like an interesting collection. Thanks for sharing.

I’m sharing about Land of Silence by Tessa Afshar on my blog today, but I’ll share a book that is on my TBR here.

“Come on, come on. I know you’re here somewhere,” Magdalena Henry murmured, squinting through the viewfinder of her camera at the ragged line of coffee pickers sorting their day’s yield.

  6. seems i’m always marking a particular passage or thought in the books I read as I want to remember it or come back later. I don’t. guess we need a meme to mark those special thoughts we find that resonate with us. you could start that meme, maybe on Mondays? Monday’s Meme?

  7. I’m sharing from The House on Foster Hill by Jamie Jo Wright on my blog, but had to put it down because nighttime and suspense and a need to sleep. So I’m currently reading something a little lighter: Holding the Fort by Regina Jennings. Here’s the first line:

The fumes of the gaslights at the foot of the stage protected Louisa Bell from the more noxious odors of her audience.

Just the kind of lighthearted read I enjoy! The weather forecast for the weekend is looking bright and sunny, so I’m planning to get back into The House on Foster Hill when the sun comes out 🙂

  8. I am sharing the first line from the YA Christian Dystopian novel All Things Now Living by Rondi Bauer Olson on my blog. Here I will post the first two lines from the novel I am starting next, Count Me In by Mikal Dawn:

“The little hairs on the back of Allegra Spencer’s neck stood at attention. He was behind her.”
