First Line Friday 56

Today is a mash-up of two memes I’ve been enjoying on Fridays.

The first one is First Line Fridays which is hosted by Hoarding Books.  First Line Fridays take 4!  Hop on over to Hoarding Books and post a link to your first line.

This first line comes from a book on my TBR list by Lynda Wilcox.  Strictly Murder is the first book in the Verity Long Mystery series.
The estate agent’s details listed two reception rooms, kitchen and bath. What they failed to mention was the dead celebrity in the master bedroom. Personal assistant Verity Long’s house hunt is about to turn into a hunt for a killer. It will take some fancy footwork to navigate the bitchy world of dance shows, television studios, and dangerously gorgeous male co-stars.

I had been in the job only six months when my employer pulled a gun on me.

The second meme for today is the THE FRIDAY 56 meme (take 3).  The only rules are to grab a book, any book, turn to page 56 or 56% in your eReader,  find any sentence, (or few, just don’t spoil it), post it, then add your URL to the Linky on the host site Freda’s Voice – easy peasy!

As I was scrolling through books on my kindle I saw this one by Leighann Dobbs that I read a few years ago.  Dying for Danish is book two in the Lexy Baker Cozy Mystery series.
When Lexy Baker lands a high paying catering job that allows her to buy some much needed kitchen equipment, she’s excited that things are going so well … until she stumbles over the body of the bride-to-be.  Suddenly Lexy finds herself in a race against time to find the killer. Aided by four iPad toting amateur detective grandma’s, her best friend and her little dog Sprinkles, Lexy finds the suspect list growing at every turn.

Lexy followed behind Nans, giving her condolences to Xavier, then Bronson.  She was surprised to find Bronson was rather civil- nice even.  But he was behaving rather nervously, his eyes darting around the room as if he was looking for someone.
What about you? Have a first line or a 56 to share?
Have a happy Friday.

  1. My first line Friday is from Christmas Magic by Cathy Kelly

Primrose Cottage sat at the very end of Johnson’s Lane, an enchantingly pretty little house with wisteria snaking into the low roof and rose bushes clustering up to peer in the windows.

    Happy Friday!

  2. Well, that’s definitely a first line that will keep you reading!

Today I’m featuring Cowboy Christmas Guardian by Dana Mentink (because it’s December and all).

The first line of the book I’m reading is: “Not Now. For the love of candy canes, not now.” From I’ll Be Home for Christmas Collection by Bonnie Calhoune, Jill Kemerer, Allie Pleiter, and Lenora Worth

  3. That is a great first line! And I love the title. As soon as I saw that, I had a ballroom picture in my mind and scrolled a little and lo and behold! That’s is exactly what the author was thinking. Nice!

I reviewed the anthology, A Grand Tour, a couple weeks ago, but it has such a great first line, it had to get included. This is from the first book, A Lord’s Chance

Southern coast of Spain, October 1852
The smell of deck tar warming under the Mediterranean sun made Miss Isabelle Strathmore smile beneath the brim of her second-best bonnet.

And to play with the Friday 56 as well, my line is from The Christmas Confection by Shanna Hatfield, which is releasing on Monday.

“Fin, I’m going.” Her brother jogged down the steps then turned around and walked backward. “But I’m keeping an eye on you.”

  4. Whoa! Those are definitely some first lines that catch the attention.

I’m sharing about The Austen Escape on my blog today, but the closest book to me is Christmas at Carton by Tamera Alexander, so I’ll use that here.

    November 13, 1863
    Franklin, Tennessee
    21 Miles South of Nashville

    “Very nice stitching, Mrs. Prescott.”

    Happy Friday!

  5. WHOA! Happy Friday, Nina!

    PROLOGUE
    LONDON, ENGLAND
    MAY 1817

I sat across the table from the man I most admired, feeling self-conscious. – The Secret of Pembrooke Park by Julie Klassen

  6. Happy Friday!
My first line is from First Street Church Romances: Love’s Christmas Cheer by Alexa Verde:

“Hurting her co-chef wasn’t an option,”

But my line from 56% of this book is: “The man Lacy-Jane married would be a very blessed man indeed.”

  7. Happy Friday!

Today, over on my blog, I am showcasing Cara Putman’s novel, Imperfect Justice. I am so excited to review this book. I have heard so many good things. On my site, I used the first lines from the prologue, so here I will share the first sentence from chapter 1.

“Emelie Wesley glanced at her watch and frowned.”

  8. Love the cover, and a great first line!

I’m sharing from The Last Summer by Brandy Bruce on my blog today. Great book!

I’m currently reading Out of the Ordinary by the always-witty Jen Turano. Here’s the (long) opening line:

Slipping through the crowd gathered on the upper deck of a most extravagant yacht, Miss Gertrude Cadwalader drew in a breath and adopted an air of what she hoped would be taken for nonchalance.

With a start like that, I’m expecting another winner!
